Disney’s channels will be removed from YouTube’s pay-TV platform after the two media giants failed to reach a new carriage agreement before Thursday’s midnight deadline. The blackout will leave subscribers unable to watch content from Disney networks, including ESPN, ABC, Disney Channel, FX, National Geographic and Freeform.
Other streaming services certainly benefitted with an influx of new subscribers as fans of teams in the ACC, Big 12 and SEC playing on ESPN, ESPN2 and the conference’s networks couldn’t watch the games. YouTube TV has roughly 10 million subscribers as customers have ditched linear cable in favor of streaming to watch television networks.
Cut off from ESPN and ABC, streaming viewers are caught in the middle of a contract battle that will feel very familiar to anyone who remembers linear TV.
