A major pattern shift in the weather is coming to the Boston area. There will be a period of heavy rain and strong winds across Massachusetts Friday. The first half of this month has been all about the cold. Fifteen of the first 16 days had below average temperatures. It's been the coldest first half of a December in Boston in 25 years.
The snow will continue to accumulate through the late afternoon hours before the storm ultimately pushes out on Sunday night. One to 3 inches of snow accumulation is possible across southeastenr Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the Islands. North of that, most parts will see just a coating to an 1 inch of snow.
The lead-up to Christmas is looking cold and light on fresh snow across New England, but as we know, the weather can always change.
Snow maps from the National Weather Service predict less than inch of snow is possible in parts of Massachusetts. The highest elevations of the Berkshires, mainly around Pittsfield, might see up to an inch of snow. The rest of the Berkshires and the northern Worcester Hills are likely to see less than that.
